‘My Jesus, I Love Thee’

A young talented and tenderhearted actress was passing along the street of a large city. Seeing a pale, sick girl lying on a couch just inside a half-open door of a beautiful building, she entered with the thought that by her vivacity and pleasant conversation, she might cheer-up the young invalid. The sick girl was a devoted Christian, and her words, her patience, her submission and heaven-lit countenance, so demonstrated the spirit of her religion that the actress was thoroughly converted, and became a true follower of Christ.

She told her father, the leader of the theater troupe, of her conversion, and of her desire to abandon the stage, stating that she could not live a consistent Christian life and follow the life of an actress. Her father was shocked, and told his daughter that their careers would be lost and their business ruined. Loving her father dearly, she partially consented to fulfill their upcoming engagement.

The evening came, the hour arrived; a large audience had assembled. The curtain rose, and the young actress stepped forward firmly amid the applause of the multitude. Amid the breathless silence of the audience, she repeated:

"My Jesus, I Love Thee, I know Thou art mine; For Thee all the follies of sin I resign;

My gracious Redeemer, my Saviour art Thou; If ever I loved Thee, my Jesus, ‘tis now!"

That was all. Through Christ she had conquered and, leaving the audience in tears, she retired from the stage never to appear upon it again. Through her influence her father was converted, and through their united evangelistic labors many were led to God.

Last night's concert performance in Cattaraugus, NY...

The Community Chorus did a great job last night during our Easter musical! What a powerhouse ensemble! The group had power and volume when needed, sensitive soft passages when asked, and always a great balance allowing all parts to be heard. The Cattaraugus Church made us feel comfortable and the audience was extremely responsive.

I LOVED IT!

The Angel and the two Statues (joke)

In a city park stood two beautiful statues, one female and the other male -- both nude. These two statues faced each other for many, many years. Early one morning an angel appeared before the statues and said, "The two of you have been truly exemplary statues and have brought enjoyment to many people that have visited the park over the years. I am hereby authorized by God to give you the greatest wish that can be bestowed upon you. I grant you the gift of life -- albeit, a limited offer. You have thirty minutes to do whatever your hearts desire."

And with that command, the two statues came to life. They smiled at each other, slowly moved their limbs about in wonderment. They looked all around, at their own bodies and back at each other. Smiling, they then ran to the nearby woods and dove behind a large bush. The angel smiled to herself as she listened to the giggling, bushes rustling and twigs snapping. (Angels aren't naive.) After fifteen minutes, the two statues emerged from the bushes, looking extremely satisfied and wearing nothing but even bigger smiles than before.

Puzzled, the angel looked at her watch and said to them, "You still have fifteen minutes. Wouldn't you like to continue?" The male statue looked at the female and asked, "Do you want to do it again?" "Oh yes!" the female statue replied. "But this time YOU hold the pigeon down and I'LL dump on its head."

Bad News (joke)

After his checkup, the doctor called the wife into his office alone. He said, "Your husband is suffering from a very severe stress disorder. If you don't do the following, your husband will surely die."

"Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast. Be pleasant at all times. For lunch make him a nutritious meal. For dinner prepare an especially nice meal for him. Don't burden him with chores. Don't discuss your problems with him, it will only make his stress worse. No nagging. And most importantly, be romantic with your husband several times a week. If you can do this for the next 10 months to a year, I think your husband will regain his health completely."

On the way home, the husband asked his wife. "What did the doctor say?"

"He said you're going to die," she replied.

A pastor was searching for something in his wife’s closet one day when he came across a small wooden box, tucked away in a remote corner. When he opened the lid, he was surprised to find nearly $2,000 in cash and two eggs. He took the box to his wife.

"Oh," she smiled awkwardly when she saw the box. "I figured you’d find that some day."

When he asked for an explanation, she replied, "well, whenever you preach a bad sermon, I place an egg in the box." The pastor looked at the two eggs in the box and thought to himself, after twenty years of preaching and only two eggs, that’s not too bad! Then he asked, "but what about the $2,000?"

She explained, "whenever I collect a dozen eggs, I sell them and put the money in the box!"

Next Sunday (3/25/07), our Community Chorus, under the direction of Bud Lowery, will present the Easter musical: ‘The Sacrifice.’ This powerful Easter audio/visual experience will be presented at the Cattaraugus United Methodist Church (Corner of Washington & South streets). The concert will begin at 7:00 PM and will feature the combined choirs of Sheridan and Cattaraugus areas. Come out and support the endless hours of preparation by all our chorus members. On Palm Sunday, April 8^th, our combined choirs will present this musical at Sheridan United @ 7:00 PM.

‘Softly and Tenderly’

Words and music by Will Lamartine Thompson (1847 – 1909)

Will L. Thompson was born in East Liverpool, Ohio. His father, Josiah Thompson, was a member of the Ohio State Legislature. Young Thompson attended the Boston Music School and did additional musical study in Germany. He later began publishing his own songs, when a publisher in New York offered him only $25 for four popular songs he had written. In a short time, millions of copies were being sold and soon he became known as "The Lord of Ohio" and "The Millionaire Songwriter."

His business earned him a sizable income in his lifetime, yet he was always known as a kind, quiet and unassuming Christian gentleman who was greatly loved and admired by his associates. Thompson was also known for his travels by horse and buggy from one small community to another throughout Ohio singing his songs to people everywhere.

This particular hymn was one of D.L. Moody’s favorites. It is said that when Moody was on his deathbed while being visited by Mr. Thompson, Moody feebly whispered: "I would rather have written ‘Softly and Tenderly’ than anything I have been able to do in my whole life."

This hymn was widely used as an invitation hymn in the great evangelistic meetings conducted by Moody and Sankey throughout Great Britain and in America.

Tuesday, March 13 @ 7:00 pm is our first and only combined rehearsal at Sheridan United Methodist. We need everyone to make this rehearsal so we can work on lining up, walking in, walking out, the solos, the voice parts, and our chorus dance steps. (okay, I just wanted to see if you were paying attention!) The chorus rehearsal tomorrow (3/13) will begin and end on time! I appreciate the sacrifice you all make to enable this ministry to exist.

Our adult church choir sings each week in the 10:30 Sunday morning worship service. The choir meets 15 minutes before the service to rehearse the morning anthem, then rehearses immediately following the service for the upcoming Sunday. The adult handchime choir rehearses on the 1^st & 3^rd Sundays immediately following the choir rehearsal. If you have any desire to sing or play…we need you…we want you.

The Sheridan Community Chorus sings during the Easter Season, Independence Day Season, & the Christmas Season. It is open to all!

‘Lift Every Voice and Sing’

Words: James Weldon Johnson (1871 – 1938)

Music by J. Rosamond Johnson (1873 – 1954)

James Weldon Johnson was well known as an author, lawyer, educator and diplomat. He was born on June 17, 1871 in Jacksonville, Florida and grew up there. Johnson received his degrees in Georgia at the University of Atlanta. He earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts.

For awhile he was principal of the Stanton school. He was founder and editor of Daily American, the first "Negro Daily" in the United States. Weldon was self- educated in law and was admitted to the Florida bar. He was U. S. consul to Venezuela and later to Nicaragua. Also, he held various positions and offices including 14 years as national secretary of the NAACP. He had six publications between 1922 and 1935 including his autobiography.

Weldon and his brother John collaborated in writing many songs, including this mornings’ hymn. This hymn has become the official song of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. It was published as sheet music in 1921.

When I got home from chorus rehearsal last night, I found that the UPS man had left a box for me on our front deck! Hallelujah...it was a box of choral books from the publisher. For those of you who are waiting for your books, I'll give them to you on Sunday or Tuesday.

DON'T FORGET! The Cattaraugus Choir members will join us this Tuesday (3/13) night in Sheridan for our chorus rehearsal.

The Car Accident

A woman and a man are involved in a car accident on a snowy, cold Monday morning. Both of their cars are totally demolished but, amazingly, neither of them is hurt.

After they crawl out of their cars, the woman says, "Wow, just look at our cars, there's nothing left of them, but we're unhurt. This must be a sign from God that we should be friends and remain as friends for the rest of our days."

Flattered, the man replies, "Oh yes, I agree with you completely; this must be a sign from God!" The woman continues, "And look at this, here's another miracle. My car is completely demolished but this bottle of wine didn't break. Surely we should drink this wine and celebrate our good fortune." Then she hands the bottle to the man.

The man nods his head in agreement, opens it, drinks half the bottle, and then hands it back to the woman. The woman takes the bottle and immediately puts the cap back on, and hands it back to the man. The man asks, "Aren't you having any?"

The woman replies, "No. I think I'll just wait for the police...."

We would love to have you join us in our choir. There are no auditions. We are looking for everyone who enjoys worshipping the Lord in song. The music we use is very "singable," and enjoyable. We rehearse immediately following each Sunday morning service ending before 12:00 noon. If you need to sit while you sing, I’ll make sure we get you a stool. (And a note for you guys…there are at least five women for each man!)

The Sheridan Community Chorusrehearses at S.U.M. every Tuesday and Thursday evening at 7:00 PM in preparation for Easter. Why not join us?

‘Jesus, Lover of My Soul’

Charles Wesley was conducting one of his many open-air meetings, this one near Killyleagh, Ireland. During the course of his preaching, a number of persons who took exception to his views assaulted him. Unable to withstand the mob, Wesley fled for his life. He took refuge in a farmhouse nearby. Jane Moore, a kind-hearted wife of a farmer, hid the panting evangelist in the milk house. She was barely in time, because at that moment some of Wesley’s assailants rushed up. Mrs. Moore tried to divert their attention by preparing refreshments. Fearful that they might search the premises and discover the harried evangelist, she went to the milk house on the pretext of getting a cold drink for her visitors.

Quickly, she directed Wesley to go through the rear window, and hide under the hedge. Wesley clambered through the window and found a little brook flowing beside the hedge, forming a pool with overhanging branches that afforded a pleasant and safe hiding place. While waiting for the vindictive Irishmen to give up the search and leave, Wesley pulled a pencil and paper from his pocket and wrote out the words to this immortal hymn, ‘Jesus, Lover of My Soul.’

Dr. George Duffield, author of ‘Stand up for Jesus,’ once said of this hymn, "If there is anything in the Christian experience of joy and sorrow, of affliction and prosperity, of life and death—this hymn truly is the hymn of the ages."
