Today's funny

In a church in Mississippi, the pastor announced that their prison quartet would be singing the following evening. The congregation was somewhat surprised, since the church wasn't located near a prison.
The next evening, four members of the church approached the stage. Then the pastor introduced them.
"This is our prison quartet," he said, "behind a few bars and always looking for the key."

From the Choir Loft
My deepest and most heartfelt thanks go out to everyone involved in the “success” of the Christmas cantata at Sheridan United Methodist church on Sunday, 12/30/07. After postponing our concert due to bad weather on 12/16/07, we had less than 2 weeks to promote our 12/30 concert. We had a full house and I want to thank you all.
Would you believe that we’re still presenting our Christmas cantata? Even if you don’t believe it…we’re presenting it for the last time this evening at 6:30 in Dunkirk. We will be singing at Holy Trinity R.C. church (1032 Central Avenue) in Dunkirk. The choir members could use your support as we close the book on our Christmas season. Our planning began last August and our rehearsals started in September. Why not come out and hear us?
We have now begun work on the Easter musical. We could use your help.
It will be fun! I promise!

I was just wondering:
Is there another word for synonym?
What’s another word for thesaurus?
How can there be self-help “groups?”
Does the reverse side also have a reverse side?
If you choked a Smurf, what color would it turn?
If you asked a librarian where the books on self-help were…
would they tell you… or would that defeat the purpose?

History of the Hymns

‘I Come With Joy’
Words: Brian Wren (1936 –) Music: from The Southern Harmony (1835)

The author of the text, Brian Wren, is one of today's leading hymn writers especially known for his concern for issues of justice, both in language and in action.
Concerning ‘I Come with Joy to Meet My Lord’ Wren said:
Its purpose was…to start with an individualistic "I come with joy" and end with a sense of being bound together with everyone else. This was a deliberate progression because I wanted to move away from what I think is an overemphasis on the individual in traditional communion hymns. I have also composed a canonic setting for stanza 5, which can be used either at the conclusion of singing or as a choral response to the benediction (in which case, use the optional ending). The canon is itself a bit of text painting, the two parts being "together bound," yet both going "our separate ways."
—"An Interview with Brian Wren" in The Hymn, vol. 32, January 1981
On August 31, 1991, Brian Wren was united in marriage with Susan Heafield, an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church, and is involved in music education. (Almost sounds like Pastor Molly’s background, doesn’t it?)

From the Choir Loft

New Year’s has traditionally been a time for looking back to the past, and more importantly, looking forward to the New Year and making resolutions to improve. So in an effort to help, I
have listed the top 10 resolutions found in a recent survey followed by some helpful suggestions.

Top 10 New Years' Resolutions:

1. Spend more time with family & friends. Join the choir and we will be your musical "friends."

2. Schedule periods of exercise. I will include periods of calisthenics during each choir rehearsal.

3. Lose weight. We don’t allow eating during choir rehearsals.

4. Quit smoking. We don’t allow smoking during choir rehearsals.

5. Enjoy life more. Choir members always enjoy the end of choir rehearsals.

6. Quit drinking. We don’t allow drinking during choir rehearsals.

7. Get out of debt. You can’t shop if you’re at choir rehearsal.

8. Learn something new. We’ll teach you a new rhythm each week.

9. Help others. You will be helping me.

10. Get organized. We need a librarian to organize our music.

See you in choir :) No auditions necessary!

The Perfect Pastor
A RECENT SURVEY HAS COMPILED ALL THE QUALITIES THAT PARISHIONERS EXPECT FROM THE “PERFECT PASTOR.” RESULTS OF A COMPUTERIZED SURVEY INDICATE THE PERFECT PASTOR…
preaches exactly 12 minutes, frequently condemns sin but never “upsets” anyone, works from 8 a.m. until midnight, is also a janitor, makes $60 a week, wears good clothes, buys good books, drives a good car, gives about $80 a week to the poor, is approximately 28 years of age, has been preaching for 30 years, gives completely of herself but never gets too close to anyone in order to avoid criticism, speaks boldly on social issues but never becomes politically involved, has a burning desire to work with teenagers, spends much of her time with senior citizens, makes 15 daily calls to parish families, visits shut-ins and the hospitalized, evangelizes the unchurched, and is always in the office when needed.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL PASTORS!

I was just wondering…
Does a fish get cramps after eating?
Is “atheism” a non-prophet organization?
If cheese is made of milk, why is it yellow?
Why is there an expiration date on my sour cream container?
If a person can be “discombobulated,” can they be “combobulated?”
Why do they say new and improved? It can’t be new if it was improved, can it?
Were drive-in banks established so most of the cars today could see their real owners?
Why is there a “permanent press” setting on an iron, when you can’t permanently press anything?
If it’s zero degrees today and it’s supposed to be twice as cold tomorrow how cold is it going to be?

History of the Carols

‘The Little Drummer Boy’

The legend of a young boy who wishes to give the newly born Christ Child a precious gift is an old one, and found in many countries. In Italy the boy has only an onion; in Spain he has an olive branch; in England he has the ability to juggle; in Holland he has a branch of freesia; in France he has his little drum.
Harry Simeone, once a choral conductor with Fred Waring, selected the latter as the basis for his winsome Christmas song titled ‘The Little Drummer Boy.’ Impulsively joining the solemn cortege of the three kings, with their splendid offerings of fragrant myrrh, pungent frankincense and gleaming gold, the boy realizes in dismay that all he has is his hand drum. Crestfallen, he nonetheless approaches the Babe in the manger and lays the drum at His feet. Only then does he notice the tender, radiant smile that appears for an instant on the face of the Holy Child. His modest gift is not without merit after all.
With its brave little melody and its “prmm, prmm, prmm” accompaniment, ‘The Little Drummer Boy’ has inspired a number of best-selling recordings, chief among them Simeone’s own (in 1958) with his choral group.
